Iowa Collision Repair Association Sponsors Senate Bill
February 9, 2010
Corporate Strategies Group President R. Scott Weiser and CSG Legislative Affairs Specialist Nicole Woodroffe have officially registered with the Iowa General Assembly and the Iowa Ethics and Campaign Finance Board to represent the interests of the member of the Iowa Collision Repair
In January, Scott Weiser met with Senate Ways and Means Committee Chair Joe Bolkcom (D- Iowa City) to discuss the association’s tax issue. After serious consideration, Senator Bolkcom agreed to sponsor a Senate Study Bill to begin the process of consideration of legislation. While this is a first step, our job now will be to assist in the preparation of the Legislative Fiscal Note that will detail the positive or negative impact of the legislation to the Iowa General Fund. This bill is SSB3180, exempting from state sales and use taxes the sale of paint and other consumed materials at an autobody shop,is sponsored by Senator Bolkcom and is the Ways and Means Committee.
The proposed legislation is written to charge sales tax on the retail price of paint supplies. This means that the body shop would no longer pay sales tax on the cost of the supplies. In ABC’s case, this means an immediate increase in net profit of 7% because they are not paying sales tax on the cost of the materials. When you look at what is spent per year on supplies, 7% is a huge number. See Chart Association.
ICRA NEEDS YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT
February 9, 2010
The legislative process is expensive. To represent the best interests of the Iowa collision industry, we are asking you for your financial support. Our presence at the Iowa State Capitol is important tto the future of every shop owner, employee and all family members. It is the intent of the ICRA to become known to our State Legislators in Des Moines. To keep this effort going this year and into the future, we need to ask each and every one to contribute what they can to this effort. This is a personal tax deduction. If everyone sent what they could that will raise our voice as an industry in Des Moines.
